V’ghn’s Trouble in the Morning named Tune of the Decade

by Chrislyn Lashington

V’ghn’s Trouble in the Morning has been declared Pan Tune of the Decade by When Steel Talks. The melodic tune has been played in panorama competitions in Grenada, the United Kingdom, New York and so far at least 11 steel orchestras have chosen it as their tune for the 2020 Trinidad & Tobago National Panorama.

When Steel Talks mentioned that Trouble in the Morning has struck a musical chord within the steel band movement and has contributed to the shift of using popular songs within Panorama.

Band from Space by Amrit Samaroo and Edwin Crazy Ayoung was the best pan tune of the previous decade ending 2009.

V’ghn’s Trouble in the Morning landed him third place at the 2019 International Soca Monarch competition in Trinidad and he is the reigning Groovy Soca Monarch of Grenada, after tying with 4-time winner Dash.

World Javelin Champion Anderson Peters Grenada homecoming

by Chrislyn Lashington

Anderson Peters was welcomed home in style on Sunday after becoming Grenada’s first athlete to be crowned World Champion in a field event. He won the Gold medal in the Men’s Javelin after throwing 86.89 meters at the Doha 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in October. Peters also holds the following 2019 titles: two-time SEC Champion, two-time NCAA Champion, NACAC Under-23 Champion, and Pan-American Champion.

A short ceremony was held at the Maurice Bishop International Airport, followed by a motorcade throughout the Eastern Main road onto La Sagesse Playing Field. Hundreds came out to celebrate in their Anderson Peters branded T-shirts and Grenadian Flags to hear speeches and enjoy cultural entertainment.

Minister Oliver Joseph announced that Anderson Peters and his coach will receive a parcel of land and the athlete will also receive a sum of money for his accomplishments.

The homecoming celebration was organised by the Ministry of Youth Development, Sports, Culture, and the Arts, in collaboration with the Grenada Olympic Committee, Grenada Athletics Association and the St. David’s Track Blazers.

Soca song by Hitz goes global with Zumba

by Chrislyn Lashington

Grenadian singer and songwriter Andrew Hitz Phillip now has his song playing all over the globe. One of his Spicemas 2019 releases, Whistle & Work was picked up by Zumba, an international dance fitness company based in 180 countries reaching 15 million people.

The song was released through the Zumba Instructor Network on 4 December, and already has videos on social media showing Zumba classes in South Korea, Ireland, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and others working out to Whistle & Work.

Last night (Wednesday, 11 December), Hitz got an opportunity to see dance fitness live to his song in Grenada for the first time at the 4th Annual Zumba Party by licensed Zumba Instructor Chrislyn Lashington.

He says that it’s an amazing and eye-opening feeling to have the honor of getting a song onto the Zumba 84th instructor compilation. To see the places and people it’s connecting, through dance fitness, is truly humbling.

This is the second time a song he’s written and produced landed on the Zumba network, the first was In We Blood performed by Machel Montano.
